Live Auction

A live auction is a commerce format where bidding runs inside a live video broadcast, and viewers bid, win and pay without leaving the screen.

How is it different from standard live commerce?

Standard live commerce sells products at a price the seller sets. A live auction lets viewers set the price through competitive bidding in real time. That turns a viewer into a bidder rather than a spectator, and no one leaves the screen until the lot closes.

Why is it strong for one-of-a-kind items?

Unlike a standard live broadcast, which needs many units of the same product, an auction can feature an item with a single unit in stock. In categories where condition and price differ piece by piece — vintage, art, pre-owned luxury, graded cards — the market lifts the price beyond what a fixed tag would ever capture.

What does it require technically?

Sub-second, two-way streaming. If the host's call and the current price on screen diverge, you get disputed sales. HLS, which transmits in segments, has a floor of 6–30 seconds and even low-latency HLS sits at 2–5 seconds, so WebRTC-based streaming is effectively a precondition. Resolution also has to hold through the closing window, when concurrent viewers peak, or buyers can't assess the item. Global examples and the six technical requirements are covered in detail in why eBay is doubling down on live auctions.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Q. Can we run live auctions on our own store?
Yes. Embed a live commerce solution that supports lot setup, real-time bidding, automatic close and win-to-payment handoff via SDK, and auctions run inside your own service without sending customers to an external platform.

Q. What if the winner doesn't pay?
This is the most common problem in live auctions. The basic defences are restricting bidding to verified members and announcing the payment deadline and non-payment penalty in advance.
