Why MARN5 Chose D2C Live Over Instagram Live

💡 The short version
The more influencer-led the brand, the bigger the impact of a single broadcast. The real question is whether that impact becomes brand equity: members, data, repeat purchases.
MARN5 carried its influencer reach into D2C live with Shoplive, helping build 10 billion KRW (about US$7.1M) in D2C sales.
Why Doesn't Instagram Live Drive the Sales You'd Expect?
Instagram Live is a powerful channel for discovery and conversation, but it hits a wall as a commerce channel. Meta retired product tags in 2023 and native checkout in August 2025. That stretches the path to purchase, so drop-off is high: and there's no viewer data and no conversion mechanics to work with.
The long path to purchase costs you buyers
You can't check out inside Instagram Live. A viewer has to leave the stream, open a browser, and find your store again. Every extra step weakens the impulse and adds another chance to walk away.
Viewer data never reaches the brand.
Sellers see aggregate numbers, viewer counts, likes, but rarely "who bought what." With viewing and purchase data severed, there's no CRM to build repeat purchases on. And platform policy makes it hard to reach out first to someone who only left a comment.
There are no real-time conversion tools
No cart on screen, no viewer-only coupons, no closing countdown. Comments and DMs alone won't catch the viewer who's still deciding, in the moment they're deciding.
Why D2C Live Matters Most for Influencer Brands

Because it turns an influencer's fandom into an asset the brand actually owns. Influencer brands already have trust and a following, so their reach is real. Instagram is strong at creating that reach: but for the reasons above, it can't hold onto members, data, or repeat purchases.
D2C live picks that reach up. Attention built on Instagram gets absorbed inside your own store, from watching through checkout and signup. MARN5 isn't alone here: mega-influencer brands like R2W and PVCS run live on their own stores for the same reason.
What MARN5 Got Out of D2C Live
It closed Instagram's gaps on its own store and built 10 billion KRW (about US$7.1M) in sales. MARN5, led by CEO Lee Yu-bin, an influencer with 380,000 followers, got three things out of running live on its own store with Shoplive.
MARN5 kept
its broadcast content and data as brand assetsShoplive renders the live experience natively inside your store, web and app. Viewers finish checkout on the same screen they're watching on, without leaving. The player and chat are customized to the brand, and because it's tied to member accounts, "who bought what" accumulates as MARN5's own CRM data.
MARN5
turned viewers into members and drove repeat purchasesOnce a viewer converts to a member, the brand can prompt the next purchase directly. And since these customers came to the store themselves, their repeat rate runs high.
MARN5 delivered
its own brand experience and improved its margins. As you'd expect from an established brand, traffic shows up reliably. Shoplive handles large concurrent audiences without dropping the stream: and unlike the big marketplaces, you're not handing over a large share of revenue in fees.
"Coupons created a real flow of traffic into the official store, and we could run the prize draw exactly the way we wanted. Next time I'd like to try quizzes and polls too. Every metric grew evenly. With no ad spend we drew about 3,000 viewers on average, logged-in viewers on our own store ran in the 24 percent range, and the product click rate averaged 53 percent."

How Live Commerce Differs by Channel
Instagram and YouTube are strong at conversation and discovery, marketplaces at new traffic, and D2C live at conversion and owning your data. (See the table below. Channel roles and data ownership compared)

How to Use Instagram and D2C Live Together
The point is to connect the two channels into a loop.
Instagram Live: use it to promote and announce the broadcast, and simulcast your D2C live stream there.
D2C live (Shoplive): convert the viewers who come across into members, and lift purchase conversion with your store's express checkout.
The data you build up then feeds product planning and marketing, and sharpens your next round of Instagram content. The more influencer-led the brand, the more it gains from the two channels feeding each other.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Instagram Live is working well for us. Do we really need D2C live too?
We'd recommend running both. Instagram Live is strong at finding new customers, but with product tags and checkout retired, buyer data and repeat-purchase history never reach the brand. D2C live keeps everything from watching to checkout inside your own store, so you build that data directly. Pair Instagram's reach with D2C live's conversion and each one completes the other.
Q. If we start D2C live, do we have to stop doing Instagram Live?
No. Keep using Instagram as the channel that finds new customers, and let D2C live be the channel that converts them into members and carries them to repeat purchases. The two aren't substitutes: they coexist.
Q. Is D2C live worth it for a brand without a big following?
Yes. Owning your data, driving repeat purchases, and saving on fees come from the D2C structure of managing customers directly, not from follower count. Early on, though, you'll also need a stage of gathering traffic through Instagram and marketplaces first.
Q. Isn't D2C live like Shoplive hard to set up?
It isn't. It integrates easily with the major D2C platforms, Cafe24, Godomall, Wisa, MakeShop, Shopify, and on web it goes in at about the level of a single script tag (SDK), so you can start without significant development work.
Q. Instagram has checkout, so why D2C live?
Instagram checkout was limited to a few markets, including the US, and from August 2025 it was phased out for most sellers. Even when payment is convenient, the viewing and purchase data, and the screen experience, stay with the platform. The effective combination is Instagram as the discovery channel, with D2C live taking on the job of building data into an asset and generating repeat purchases.
