Retail Media
Retail media is a retailer selling its own shopping surfaces and customer data as advertising — and its strength is that those surfaces sit right before purchase.
Why did it grow so fast?
As third-party cookies closed off, advertising that relied on outside tracking lost accuracy. Retailers, meanwhile, hold actual purchase data and can confirm inside one system whether the person who saw the ad bought. Being one step from checkout makes conversion close.
What do video surfaces add?
Search results and banners are finite inventory; live and short-form create new inventory. A brand can run a broadcast on the retailer's channel and get the performance back as data — a new revenue line for the retailer, exposure near actual buyers for the brand.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Is retail media only for large retailers?
Scale helps but isn't the requirement. Any channel with traffic and member data can build ad inventory for the brands it carries.
Q. What should a brand check?
The measurement standard. Whether you receive impressions and clicks only, or attribution through to purchase, changes the decision entirely.
Q. How does retail media differ from ordinary display advertising?
In what can be measured. Display struggles to follow the click; retail media can connect impression to purchase inside one system. The trade-off is that the audience is limited to that retailer's visitors.
