Social Commerce

Social commerce is discovery and purchase happening inside platforms like Instagram or TikTok — strong on reach, but the customer data stays with the platform.

What does social commerce refer to?

Selling where the product is discovered inside a social feed, live stream, or short-form video and bought without leaving it. Discovery starts from a recommendation algorithm rather than a search box, which is the structural difference from conventional ecommerce.

What is it strong at?

Reach. Because the algorithm distributes by interest rather than follower count, content can find people who have never heard of the brand. For exposing a product to someone with no prior intent, an owned store can't compete.

Where are the limits?

Customer data and content stay with the platform. If who watched, how long, and what they asked never connects to your member records, repeat purchase is hard to design — and a policy or algorithm change can cut reach overnight. Fees and checkout flow follow the platform's rules too.

How do you convert that reach into owned assets?

Three routes are used in practice: simulcasting the same broadcast to social while purchases land on your store; importing the short-form you posted socially back into your store for always-on exposure; and reusing social UGC on product pages. What they share is taking the reach from social and leaving the record in your own domain.

Shoplive's view

Framing social against your own store forces a choice that isn't real — the two do different jobs. Social is the cheapest way to reach someone you've never met; your own store is the only place that records the relationship. So rather than arguing against social reach, we'd connect it so that reach leaves a trace inside the brand's domain.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Is social commerce the same as live commerce?
No. Social commerce classifies by where selling happens; live commerce classifies by how — real-time video. A live stream on social is both.

Q. Isn't social live enough on its own?
For reach, it can be. But viewer and buyer information stays with the platform, so the limits appear once you need to design repeat purchase and LTV.

Q. What constrains Instagram Live?
The platform sets the feature scope, not the brand. Stream length, commerce integration, and what data you receive can change with policy, which makes it a poor foundation to depend on.

Q. Can you reuse social videos on your own store?
Yes. Features that automatically convert Reels or Shorts into store short-form let you carry the asset over without re-uploading.

Q. How do you measure social commerce?
Reach and engagement alone create an illusion. Follow whether people who arrived from social became members and bought again on your store — that's where the channel's real value shows.
